Do Electric Cars Need Servicing?
Yes — while electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars, they still require regular maintenance. Understanding what needs checking and finding a qualified EV technician are essential for keeping your electric car in peak condition.
What Gets Serviced on an EV?
- Brakes: EVs use regenerative braking which reduces brake wear, but brakes still need inspection and brake fluid needs regular replacement
- Tyres: EVs are heavier than equivalent ICE cars, so tyres wear faster. Regular rotation and alignment checks are important
- Coolant: EV batteries have their own cooling system that needs monitoring and occasional fluid changes
- Cabin filter: Same as any car — the pollen/cabin filter needs regular replacement
- Battery health check: Annual battery health diagnostics ensure your battery is degrading within normal parameters
- Software updates: While many updates are done over-the-air, some require a workshop visit
- 12V battery: EVs still have a traditional 12V battery for accessories — and it still fails
How Often Should You Service an EV?
Most manufacturers recommend annual servicing or every 10,000-15,000 miles. Tesla recommends brake fluid testing every 2 years and cabin filter replacement every 2 years. Other manufacturers have similar schedules.
Why You Need an EV-Qualified Technician
Electric vehicles operate at voltages up to 800V. Working on the high-voltage system without proper training and equipment is extremely dangerous. EV-qualified technicians hold IMI Level 2, 3 or 4 EV qualifications and have the correct PPE and insulated tools.
Costs
EV servicing is generally cheaper than ICE vehicle servicing — typically £100-£250 for an annual service. However, if battery issues arise, costs can be significant, making proper maintenance even more important.
Finding an EV Specialist
Use Specialist Garage Finder to search specifically for EV and hybrid specialists. Look for garages with IMI EV qualifications and experience with your specific brand.
